COAT COLOR PROBABILITIES
The following is a table of coat color probabilities based upon breeding to a palomino, in this case, specifically Sir RH
Maximilian. It is important to note that the genetic formula for palomino used in this table is based upon the color traits
inherited by “Max” from each parent as well as comprehensive research of the coat colors in his background. This
formula for palomino may not apply to every palomino.
Secondly, the terminology used in this table as well as the abbreviations for the color alleles follows the protocol developed
by the Veterinary Genetics Lab at the University of California, Davis, and specifically Dr. Ann Bowling, author of Equine
Color Genetics. Other excellent research has been done in the area of equine coat color and every researcher uses their own
vocabulary. For the sake of simplicity, this should be noted.
The generally accepted abbreviations for the color alleles represents dominant traits (those that need only be inherited from
one parent to show in the offspring) by a capital letter. Recessive traits (those that must be inherited from both parents
to show in the offspring) are represented by a lower case letter.
The genetic term “red” is used for horses that do not exhibit the black points pattern of a bay, such as chestnuts,
sorrels and browns. Genetically, these horses are all reds that exhibit different ranges on the red color spectrum.
The dilute colors are buckskin (dilute bay), palomino (dilute red), and gruella (dilute black). The dilute gene is superimposed
over the basic body color and dilutes the color accordingly. The roan and dun genes are inherited as specific color patterns
and are dominant genes. Sometimes these colors can be confused for one another, such as buckskin for dun and gruella for mouse
dun. This is where it is important to look at the colors in the animal’s background to help determine which is which.
If one of the parents isn’t a roan or a dun, the foal isn’t a roan or a dun.
Finally, it is of utmost importance to remember that these possible coat color combinations are statistical probabilities,
not guarantees. For example, a one in four chance that the foal will be palomino is represented as the fraction ¼. This does
not mean that one in four foals will be palomino. This fraction should be read as “each conception has a one-in-four
chance of being palomino”. Due to the randomness of nature, the possibility exists that even if each conception has
a chance of being palomino, a palomino may never be produced. The best bet is to use this table as a guide for what cannot
be produced by specific color crosses.

* Mare Health for Breeding
Breeding your Mare, Tips!
Here are some tips to help insure an easy time getting your mare pregnant, and having an easy pregnancy and a healthy foal.
These are the things we did with our 22 year old mare.
Testimonial to Dynamite Nutritional Products
Dynamite Stallion, Dynamite Mare double Dynamite Colt!
In the summer or 2000 we decided to breed our mare Kayla to our stallion Sir RH Maximilian. We had Max standing at Woodland
Stallion Station at the time. It was only a matter of asking to have her checked and bred. The vet team that is used there
is from UC Davis. Kayla our mare was 22 year old at the time and had not had a foal since 1985. We did a biopsy to see if
she could conceive. Due to the findings, scar tissue and many cysts in her uterus they gave her only a 10% chance of conceiving
and even less of carrying the foal to term.
We had her on Dynamite Regular already for years and added Breeder pack as soon as we decided to breed her. Her first cycle
the vets missed her since she hardly shows signs of heat. They short cycled her and she came into heat very well, she was
bred again. Since she loves my Arabian Gelding Beau after she was inseminated we put the two of them in side bys side paddocks
til we knew that she ovulated two days later.
She Had! So we turned her out in a pasture with her “boyfriend” and at the 14 day check she was pregnant and at
45 days we saw a heart beat! We were thrilled. We were advised not to do anything to upset her or ride her at all. So she
basically had a year off of any riding. She was feed a pelleted feed and grass hay with her Dynamite Regular , Breeder Pac
and a pound of complete feed. She glowed throughout her pregnancy and looked better than we had ever seen her. In a way breeding
her was the best thing we ever did for her.
She foaled at 1 year 4 days of pregnancy. The delivery was fast and uneventful. The colt was up on his feet in 25 minutes
after his birth, all 38” at the shoulder of him.. She had a beautiful palomino colt with four white stockings and a
blaze. Initially he even had blue eyes but by five days they turned brown. The colt is growing up so fast already. He is already
quite an nimble on his long straight legs. Kayla is still looking Great and no one believes us when we tell them she’s
now 23!
We gave the colt Dynamite probiotic the day he was born he has not had any trouble at all with foal scours. We also make sure
that Kayla gets some of it everyday too. This way he is getting the benefits of it through nursing.
Since the writing of this two more mares who have been on the same Dynamite products and are both over 20 years old have conceived
foals from Sir RH Maximilan, we cant wait to see their foals next year next year!

More about Dynamite Products and Breeder Pac
Breeder PacTM
Description:
Usually, Dynamite or Dynamite Plus is all that the average, healthy mare or stallion needs for optimum reproductive performance.
However, a horse that has been raced or in competition often has been given bloodbuilders high in iron and copper, and these
tend
to suppress the manganese and zinc important for reproductive function. These horses as well as heavily booked stallions,
problem
breeders and older breeding animals will benefit from Breeder Pac.
Directions and Hints:
Feed 2 oz./60 gm of Breeder Pac per day (1000# horse) along with 1 oz. /30 gm of Dynamite or 1.5 oz/45 gml of Dynamite Plus.
Do not add other brands of supplements or fortified feeds. You should provide 1 to 1 and/or 2 to 1 Free Choice and Free Choice
NTM Salt. Best results will be obtained by feeding Breeder Pac starting at least 60 days before breeding and continuing through
gestation. Breeder Pac has also been used very successfully for cattle. Studies at the University of Maryland showed treated
cows
exhibiting earlier heat cycles, ovulating earlier in the season, and having fewer instances of early embryonic death. Cattle
should
receive 3 oz. per day.
Donna Pettit from Flower Mound, TX, says:
"Breeder Pac -- Good Stuff!
I recently received an email from a distributor that I signed up last year. She could not get over the fact that her 22 year
old mare, a
former barrel horse, now broodmare, had "taken" so quickly. She was bred to a 23 year old stud horse that has become a well
known barrel horse sire in his later years. I had advised her to put the mare on the Breeder Pac along with the basics of
Dynamite
because the mare did not breed the year before and did not have a foal last year. She said that she took the mare to the stud
on
April 9th and figured she would be in around the 14th or 15th and she knew that she was going to Branson, Mo. for a little
vacation at that time. She said that on the 29th, she was called and told that the mare was 14 days in foal. I am sure that
it didn't
hurt that the stud has been a long time Dynamite horse, and was himself on the Breeder Pac. The owner of the mare had been
concerned that at her age and with not breeding the year before, the mare would be there for awhile trying to be bred. Not
so!
Dynamite is cheap in the long haul! She said that was the cheapest mare care bill she had ever had! Her words were "This Breeder
Pac is good stuff!".
I personally have recommended it for a lot of the barrel horses that are not broodmares or studs --it seems to help them relax
and it
has a calming (probably because of the higher magnesium) and balancing effect. I am saying this because I want others to know
that even though the information in our catalog talks about breeding and studs and mares, this product has many, many other
uses -
not just breeding."

If you want an early foal:
Your best bet here would be to start your mare under lights and in a stall in November or December. A simple 100 watt blub
for 16 hours a day is all it will take. You will have to be sure that in your location she will be warm enough, you may need
to blanket her.
What this does is fool her body into thinking that it is Spring already and she will start having better Heat Cycles.
The better her heat Cycles the easier it will be to get her in foal early in the year.
We also started our mare on Breeder pac in addition to Dynamite Regular a month before starting the breeding process.
Where you can get Dynamite Products:
Jesse and I are distributors and we offer our customers Dynamite products at a discounted rate. They can be easily drop shipped
to you. If you are interested please feel free to call us or email us.

Figuring out the Cost to Breed
The cost to breed:
You first need to figure out if you will bring your mare to be bred or have the semen shipped.
For mares over 15 that have not had a foal or not had a foal for many years it is by far easier to get them pregnant at a
breeding facility. It is not imperative that they are at Aspen Equine, but they should be at a breeding facility where they
can be checked at each phase along the way.
Depending on your mare it can be as little as three weeks away depending on where she is in her cycle.
For mare care costs call Aspen Equine or the facility where you are considering taking your mare.
Shipped Semen
If you choose to do shipped semen. Start using a calendar and mark your mares heat cycles.
Have your local vet check her to be sure she is breeding sound.
The more knowledge you have about you mare and her cycles the easier it will be to determine when to call the vet to have
her checked and the more time you will have to get the shipment to you before she ovulates. This can be more work on your
part. But you can keep you mare at home.
We require a 48 hour notice so we can collect and ship to you. Please keep this in mind when considering shipped semen. The
cost for shipping is through your fed ex account, If an equitainer is needed there is a refundable deposit required
